Attempts at Sculpting - Part 4

A while back I sculpted this fellow, a three legged alien that was a cross between a snail, a crab, and a tortoise - none of which was the plan initially.

I'd posted this on a couple of forums and got some surprisingly positive feedback. I even discussed how to get this manufactured. Unfortunately, due to my lack of experience, I had created a figure that would be difficult to cast without costing a fortune and having several small fiddly pieces. I had also painted the figure meaning that the molding process would cause a reaction with the paint.

Even though this figure was never going to progress, I was still getting positive comments, and also there were people posting questions on what had happened. One was asking "who sculpted the moulting crab alien?". The thread on TMP contained images of hermit crab like aliens that were a lot better than what I had envisioned, sooooo.....

I got the green stuff out and started another figure. It's still very rough, has no arms of yet, the "feet" need sorted, and the face needs tidied. I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile getting the body cast and then adding the arms/claws, so any and all comments are appreciated (even if it's to say "that's rubbish").

Attempts at Sculpting - Part 3

After sculpting the vitrinid snailien, and getting some great feedback, I decided to try again. Here's the works in progress so far. One is a power armoured version of the Hhurrk low-tech reptilians I posted earlier, and the other is an insectoid. Not sure if either will be castable(?). I've also gained a greater appreciation of the professionals ability to make a range of figures that look alike - I doubt I'll be able to make more that look the same.

The insects still have the arms to get added, and I think I'll add some sort of staff to support the spindly legs which still need trimmed down a little.

First attempt at sculpting Part 2 - The Vitrinid

The Vitrinid are a rare species, not often encountered. Their home world in unknown but they have been found throughout the galaxy. This large species, which is believed to live for hundreds of years, is most unusual in that no two are exactly alike. The amount of appendages varies greatly, as does colouration of both skin and carapace - though not all have carapaces - and they can extrude eyes at will from any part of their bodies. They communicate amongst themselves by vibratory contact but are able to communicate with humans through speech.

They are are armed with weapons that fire 6mm calcite darts at extreme velocities. These small darts, which are razor sharp and almost as hard as diamond, also vibrate causing severe damage even after the initial impact.

Vitrinids are almost impervious to most solid round firing weapons as massive tissue has to be inflicted before they are incapacitated.

First attempt at sculpting

Here's my very first attempt at sculpting. I've never used greenstuff before and this is still a work in progress. The recent chat on Dropship Horizon about alien races inspired me to try and create a non-humanoid species. My 4 year old daughter thinks it should be called a Snurtle because it looks like a cross between a snail and a turtle.

This isn't exactly how it was planned but once I'd started the figure kinda grew itself. I hadn't planned on the carapace and the head to look how it does but I hope it looks okay. I still need to work on the weapon but never having worked with greenstuff before I've no idea how to work in small detail.
